|Scope & Content||
Genealogical and historical material about Cabell, Lincoln and Wayne counties. Transcriptions of books, census records and deed books. Personal family genealogy. Lisle Brown, curator, entered negotiations again in Nov. 1979 to acquire Lambert's material (first gift had been a notebook of little value)., After Dr. James Phipps, Huntington dentist doing genealogical research found reference to the Lambert papers microfilmed at WVU. He suggested that Lisle make contact with Mrs. Hanger. Mrs. Hanger and her sisters began a complicated procedure of trying to coordinate the desires of the family members regarding the disposition of the papers with policies of our department- and as of 6 Dec 1979 all the detail had not been agreed upon. Feb 7, 1980 Papers arrived yesterday, ca 13 cu ft of notes, mostly Ts, bound in Acco binders. June 4, 1980 Kim Wilson, full time student assistant., began on June 2 to sort and identify the notebooks in the WVU guide. Jan 11 1982 Finished indexing in the Fall-Spring 1980-1981; discarded attempt to correlate collection with the WVU guide since too many notebooks were still missing. Oct 1985 finally received a total of 478 notebooks in addition to other materials, notably photos, which James Jeffery sorted and identified. Linda Nance and others helped index most of the notebooks. Family formally presented collection to university in July 1985, where, ironically, I had my picture taken with them( since Lisie was gone and I had never met any of them in connection with this business before). A daughter, Mrs. Ruth French, after much unpleasantness, loaned a portrait of Mr. Lambert to hang near where the collection is shelved ( she wanted it in the Hoffman Room, since she believed her father;contribution to the community were so much greater that Dr. Hoffman's)
Three notebooks added by Dr. Ken Hechler at July 1985 presentation; concern civil war activities in Cabell co and Wayne co. 7-16-1997 Carrie Eldridge began a detailed list of contents notebook by notebook in 1995. Department work study students began photocopying security copies Spring 1997.
